Buddy Reading with Room 11

Today we had buddy reading with our big buddies in Room 11.
We have been focusing on the strategy of retelling.
Our buddies made up some really cool games and activities to help us focus on the things we need to remember to retell a text in detail.
Who can tell our blog visitors some of the cool things that we did today with our buddies?

Recount Writing in Room 5.

Our main focus for writing this term has been Recounts. We watched the story of Christian the Lion. We then recounted what happened. Here is Gibby's recount of Christian's story.
Can you identify some of the recount features Gibby has used in his writing?
Christian The Lion.
In 1969 there were two men called John and Ace . One day they went to a shop called Harrods. You could buy anything at Harrods. They saw a little lion in a cage. John and Ace thought the lion should have a better home. They decided to save up for the lion. The Lions name was Christian.
Christian was very little so he could hide under the furniture. He also liked to lie on the tables. John and Ace took Christian to a church to exercise. Christian was great at soccer but Christian got too big. John and Ace knew they would have to release him back into the wild. Christian did too.
John and Ace called a safari park in Africa. They booked a flight to Africa. The flight was fifteen hours lone.
When John and Ace got to Africa they went into the wild but Christian didn't want to go. So John and Ace had to walk him around. After a few months John and Ace left to go back to London. They were sad to leave Christian.
One year later they decided to visit Christian in Africa. Everyone said that Christian would not remember them but John and Ace didn't care they went anyway. When they arrived in Africa they went searching for Christian. After hours of searching they found a lion pack. John called Christian's name. A lion stopped and stared at him. Then John and Ace called the lion again. Suddenly the big lion came charging towards them and jumped up on them and gave them a giant hug.                    John and Ace felt fantastic because Christian had remembered them.

Hit It

 Hit It.
Thump, thump, thump! I heard as Room 5 was charging out to the basketball court. I was excited. When we got onto the basketball court we saw Peter. Peter told us that he was a professional tennis coach.  Peter said, “  I am going to teach you about tennis”.
Peter told us about the face, the frame, the neck and the handle on the bottom of the racket.
First we did some games to warm up. Next we did this crocodile game. You had to roll the tennis balls at people. If you hit them they had to be a crocodile as well.
We learnt about hand and eye co-ordination.
At the end we played one last game. We had to throw the ball up and hit it over the net. Our team won. I was super puffed at the end of Hit It. I had heaps of fun and so did the rest of Room 5.

Eric Carle Inspired Collages

Eric Carle Inspired Sea Creatures

Room 5's author study this term has been Eric Carle. His book the Seahorse inspired us to create our own collage sea creatures.
We painted sheets of paper with bright colours. Then we added dots, spots and patterns to them.
Then we sketched our sea creature. We then tore up the painted paper into small pieces and collaged our sea creatures shape. We used a range of different colours and patterns. Once our creature was covered we put a coat of PVA glue on to seal it. Next  on a separate sheet of paper we used dye to create a background. Finally we glued our sea creature onto the background sheet.
We hope you like them. We think they look amazing!
